The Småland landscape lies at the heart of PM & Friends’ philosophy and guiding theme – Forest, Meadow & Lake. Here, nature is not only a backdrop, but an experience in itself. Just beyond the city, you’ll find tranquil trails, shimmering lakes, and unspoilt forests inviting you to slow down, explore, and reconnect.

Notteryd Nature Reserve

An enchanting nature reserve offering a rich variety of landscapes – from quiet pine forests and open wetlands to serene lakeshores. Well-marked trails make it equally suited for a gentle stroll or a longer hike.

Our recommendation: The yellow trail, approximately 3.7 km, winds through forest and open marshland. Along the way, you’ll find rest areas with fire pits – ideal for a peaceful pause.
Good to know: The area is renowned for its giant’s kettles, dramatic rock formations shaped by glacial meltwater during the Ice Age.

Växjösjön & Södra Bergundasjön

A classic lakeside walk close to the city centre, Växjösjön offers a beautifully maintained loop of around 4.5–5 km, with sweeping views across the water.
For those wishing to linger longer, the path can be extended to Lake Trummen or continued all the way to Södra Bergundasjön, creating a route of up to 12 km.

Our recommendation: Perfect for a morning run or an unhurried walk. Benches and small jetties invite quiet moments by the water. During summer, pedal boats are available nearby. The area also features two swimming spots, an outdoor gym, and a spacious playground.

Åsnen National Park

One of Sweden’s newest national parks, located approximately 30–40 minutes from Växjö. Åsnen is a place of striking beauty, where forests, lakes, and islands come together in a landscape rich with wildlife – ideal for hiking, cycling, or paddling.

Highlights:

  • Trollberget Trail (2 km): A short yet memorable walk with dramatic rock formations and a distinctly fairytale-like atmosphere.
  • Bjurkärr: One of Sweden’s most species-rich beech forests, particularly breathtaking in spring when wood anemones carpet the forest floor.
  • Birdlife: Bring binoculars – the park is celebrated for its birdlife, with frequent sightings of ospreys and divers.

Good to know: The long-distance cycling route Sydostleden passes through the park, offering an elegant way to combine cycling with nature exploration.

Bokhultet Nature Reserve

A calm and inviting nature reserve just minutes from Växjö’s city centre. Leafy woodland paths and waterside trails along Södra Bergundasjön make this an ideal setting for a quiet walk or an easy jog.

Our recommendation: Pack a light picnic and enjoy one of the open spots by the lake.

Kronoberg Castle Ruins

A historic landmark set beside Lake Helgasjön, where centuries of history meet tranquil surroundings. Ideal for a short walk enriched by local heritage.

Our recommendation: Bring a picnic and take in the expansive lake views from the castle ruins.

Bergkvara Nature Reserve

A lesser-known gem featuring open meadows, forest paths, and abundant wildlife – perfect for guests seeking a slower, more contemplative nature experience.

Our recommendation: Combine your visit with the nearby castle ruins and a coffee by Lake Helgasjön.
Good to know: Bergkvara is particularly appreciated by birdwatchers, especially during spring and autumn.

Småland is a landscape of forests, meadows, and shimmering lakes. It is the world of Astrid Lindgren, red wooden cottages, and timeless storytelling – but also a region shaped by architecture, glassmaking, design, and a deep-rooted culinary culture.

Växjö Cathedral

One of Växjö’s most iconic landmarks, beautifully located in the heart of the city. With origins dating back to the 12th century, the cathedral seamlessly blends historic heritage with contemporary elements.

Highlights:
Architecture: The striking red façade and soaring spire are impressive in their own right.
Glass art: Inside, you’ll find remarkable glass artworks by internationally acclaimed artist Bertil Vallien.
Stillness: A serene space for reflection, or simply a moment of quiet calm.

Our recommendation: Check the cathedral’s programme – concerts and choral performances are occasionally held here, making full use of the exceptional acoustics.

Kulturparken Småland – Smålands Museum & Utvandrarnas Hus

Discover Småland’s history and cultural heritage through Smålands Museum and The Swedish Glass Museum.

Utvandrarnas Hus tells the powerful story of the great emigration from Småland to America during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Located in central Växjö, it offers an engaging and deeply human insight into Swedish history.

Highlights:
– Exceptional examples of Småland’s glassmaking tradition.
– Personal stories from emigrants, told through letters, diaries, and photographs.
Vilhelm Moberg: Insights into the author behind The Emigrants series and the literary legacy it left behind.
– Interactive exhibits, including films and digital installations.

Good to know: Smålands Museum features a thoughtfully curated museum shop. At Utvandrarnas Hus, Mammornas Café serves coffee and authentic Lebanese cuisine, prepared with care and warmth by chef Hayla Baydoun.
